Welcome to the Annotated DN online, a searchable version of the Diplomatarium Norvegicum annotated with information about signatories and localisations. First signatory title: [?]This searches for documents on the basis of the titles of the first signatory. Titles are (basically) in normalised Old Norwegian.
First signatory rank: [?]Documents are grouped into categories according to the titles of the first signatory. There are 10 classes based on the classification of Mørck (1980): kongelige (royalty), høgere embetsmenn (nobles, higher officials), høgere geistlige (higher clergy), lågere embetsmenn (lower officials), lågere geistlige (lower clergy), lagmenn (lawyers), borgere (citizens), lagrettemenn (magistrates), bønder (untitled individuals) and unclassified documents. For more details see Blaxter (2017a).
First signatory first name: [?]This searches for documents on the basis of the first name of the first signatory. Names are (basically) in normalised Old Norwegian.
First signatory other names: [?]This searches for documents on the basis of the other names of the first signatory. Names are (basically) in normalised Old Norwegian.
At least one female signatory: [?]This returns only documents whose signatories include at least one woman.
Earliest date: [?]Return documents dated no earlier than...
Latest date: [?]Return documents dated no later than...
Full location*: [?]This and all other location fields search for documents by localisation - these localisations are primarily based on the place of production, location of meetings and home locations of signatories identified from charter texts. Rygh's encyclopedia of Norwegian farm names was used as the main source for these. Individual documents are often localised to multiple places, meaning that you may see multiple pins on the map for a single document. For more details, see Blaxter (2017a). Crucially, this means that any searches using the locations fields restricts results to documents which have been localised. So far, 10565 out of 10725 original, Nordic-language documents have been localised.
